Family Nature Walk

Arboretum

This walk is a fun, fascinating way for families with children elementary age and younger to explore the natural world. Adults must attend. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and come prepared for weather. Walks canceled for unsafe conditions. Free, no registration required. Meet at the Visitor Center.

Bioinformatics Café @ CHTC

Genome Assembly Tutorial + Co-Working

April 8th, 2:30pm–4:30pm

3610 Morgridge Hall

Join CHTC facilitators at the Bioinformatics Café for a tutorial on genome assembly using Oxford Nanopore sequencing data on CHTC! This session focuses on practical strategies for assembling genomes from long-read Nanopore data using shared computing resources. We’ll discuss how to run long-read assemblers efficiently, manage large input datasets, and take advantage of CHTC’s high-memory and high-throughput capabilities to move beyond laptop- or lab-server–scale assemblies.

Arboretum Animals Exploration Station

Learn about animals that call the Arboretum home through indoor and outdoor activities. Free, no registration required. Participants may come and go during this drop-in event. Meet at the Visitor Center. Presented in conjunction with UW–Madison Science Expeditions.

Night Walk: Sky Dance

Listen for frogs and other night animals, like woodcocks. We can’t guarantee that wildlife will appear, but if they do, we may see the woodcock’s fascinating mating ritual known as sky dance. 2026 Undergraduate Symposium

April 17th, 9:30am–5:30pm

The Undergraduate Symposium is UW-Madison's largest annual showcase of undergraduate research, scholarly achievement, community-engaged work, and creativity. Over 600 undergraduates present projects from all areas of study at this event each year. All are welcome to attend. Join us to celebrate undergraduate accomplishments, learn, be inspired, and make new connections!

Ecological Restoration Work Party

Meet at Grady Tract parking lot (SE corner Seminole Hwy & W Beltline Frontage Rd), UW–Madison Arboretum

Volunteer for habitat restoration activities in prairies, savannas, and woodlands. Tools and training provided. Groups welcome with advance notice. Meet at Grady Tract parking lot, southeast corner of Seminole Hwy. and W. Beltline Frontage Rd. (No restroom facilities at site.) Arboretum Garden Tour

Celebrate the return of spring on a flower-filled stroll through Longenecker Horticultural Gardens’ dazzling collection of 110 magnolia trees. Tour led by David Stevens, garden curator and Magnolia Society International board member.
