2024 WID Symposium: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13 (Discovery Building)

The WID 2024 Symposium is a day-long event dedicated to the exploration of change in complex systems in digital and natural environments. This gathering serves as an opportunity for researchers at every career stage, to showcase their ongoing work, foster relationships, strengthen WID’s internal network, and promote collaboration in pursuit of our interdisciplinary research goals.

The event will include breakfast, lightning talks, Wiley Award ceremony, lunch/workshop, poster session, music, and a celebratory reception.

With participation from the entire 200-member WID team, this event offers an excellent platform to highlight our partnerships.


Diversity Forum 2024:vThreads of Belonging: Navigating Differences and Building Community (8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13 & Thursday, November 14, Union South)

Diversity Forum is the largest annual conference in the Midwest centered on the values of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. The forum builds on more than 50 years of UW initiatives aimed at making the university a place where all students, staff, and faculty can thrive. Hosted by the Division of Diversity, Equity & Educational Achievement, the Diversity Forum features engaging speakers, presentations and panel discussions on topics ranging from best practices for fostering inclusive, equitable and accessible classrooms to expanding and deepening our understanding of American and world history. Diversity Forum draws in hundreds of participants from across the state of Wisconsin and beyond.

 


SMPH Collaborate: 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22 (Health Sciences Learning Center, Room 1345)

 The campus community including undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, research staff, and faculty — are invited to attend SMPH Collaborate, featuring presentations by postdocs on their cutting-edge research, followed by a postdoc poster session and social hour with hors d’oeuvres to promote collaboration.

Crossroads of Ideas: Growing Without Gravity: 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21 (DeLuca Forum, Discovery Building)

Can plants thrive amid the zero-gravity chaos of space? Could the stars themselves hold the recipe for life? Join Crossroads to find out!
Guest presenters Simon Gilroy, Susanna Widicus Weaver, and moderated by Eric Wilcots.

Ready to leave Earthly bounds behind? Join an absolutely out-of-this-world Crossroads of Ideas, where astrobiology and astrochemistry come together in cosmic fashion! Plant biologist Dr. Simon Gilroy and astrochemist Dr. Susanna Widicus Weaver are your guides for an evening of star-studded discovery, diving into everything from the surprising resilience of plants in space to the chemistry that could hint at life beyond our planet.

Moderated by Eric Wilcots, this event will tackle cosmic questions like: How do plants handle the zero-gravity chaos of space? Could the stars themselves hold the recipe for life? With Gilroy’s upcoming plant experiment on the International Space Station and Weaver’s quest to uncover the secrets of interstellar molecules, this is more than a talk—it’s an invitation to explore life’s mysteries among the stars!
