HRPP Newsletter – January 2026

CTI Research Forum

The Clinical Trials Institute is hosting a virtual research forum at noon on February 11th. Join them to learn more about the UW | UW Health Research Operations Committee (UROC) and its study feasibility review timeline and submission requirements, including requests for nursing resources. Panelists will also speak to best practices to help ensure an efficient and timely review. See this page for more information and to register.

Plain Language Reminder

Study teams, please remember to use plain language in participant-facing documents such as advertisements and consent forms so non-scientific readers can understand the study’s purpose and procedures. You can make changes like:

  • Using words like “about” instead of “approximately”
  • Describing blood draw amounts in both milliliters and teaspoons/tablespoons
  • Using active voice instead of passive voice

“Approximately 45 milliliters of blood will be collected via venipuncture,” can be appropriate for a medical journal. “We will draw about 3 tablespoons (45 milliliters) of your blood from a vein in your arm,” is better for a consent form.

Plain language resources and guidance are available at:

Updating Consent Forms in REDCap

The REDCap application, supported by SMPH, is one method of obtaining electronic consent. If your study is IRB approved to utilize REDCap to obtain electronic consent and a change of protocol results in a new version of the consent form, the electronic consent form must also be updated. When making updates to electronic consent versions in REDCap, please be cautious not to overwrite previous versions, as this can result in loss of proper documentation of consent. Please visit the SMPH REDCap e-Consent Framework page for guidance on how to properly set up and make changes to electronic consent documents in the REDCap application or reach out to the REDCap support team by submitting a ticket in the Navigator portal: https://smph-navigator.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/69/group/207

We’re Hiring!

Our office is hiring an IRB Analyst to join the HS Team. See the Position Vacancy listing for details. The application period closes on February 3rd.
