May UW–Madison Research Events

You’re Invited: Exploring Non-Federal Research Funding – May 14 at Union South

In response to evolving changes in the federal funding landscape, the Sustainability Research Hub and the Office of Business Engagement invite you to a sustainability research conversation focused on exploring non-federal sources of research support.

Event Details:

  • Date: Wednesday, May 14
  • Time: 2:30 – 4:00 PM
  • Location: Union South (room will be identified on screens throughout building)

This event is designed to foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing across campus, with an emphasis on funding opportunities from philanthropic foundations, industry-sponsored research, and corporate partnerships.

Recognizing that expertise on these sources of support is distributed throughout our community, we welcome faculty and staff from all colleges and disciplines to join the discussion. Together, we will explore strategies, share experiences, and work toward building collective resources to support UW–Madison researchers in identifying and pursuing these alternative avenues. We will also be virtually joined by panelists from foundations and industry, including The Sloan Foundation, The Walton Family Foundation, PPG, and P&G.

We hope participants will come away with:

  • A greater understanding of the non-federal funding landscape
  • Insights into where opportunities may arise
  • Guidance on the initial steps for developing partnerships and proposals

We hope you’ll join us for this important and timely conversation.  Please RSVP here and feel free to share this invitation with colleagues who may be interested.

Wisconsin Science Festival Rolls Out 2025 Feature: “Rock and Roll” Oct. 16-26

Spring is in the air—and so is the buzz of the Wisconsin Science Festival! On April 24, dozens of statewide event hosts attended the festival’s virtual launch party. The event officially kicked off the statewide planning efforts and announced this year’s festival feature: “Rock and Roll.” Now entering its 15th year, the festival will celebrate the dynamic intersection of sound, music, performing arts, geology, physics, motion and more, throughout Wisconsin, October 16-26.

“‘Rock and roll’ is a play on words—it’s not just about sound and music, but also about the geology that shapes Wisconsin, the physics of motion, and the creative energy that drives discovery,” says Samantha Mulrooney, Director of the Wisconsin Science Festival at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. “While events related to the feature are not required for participation, it’s designed to inspire a wide range of programs and events across disciplines.”
