October Shout-Outs: Stephen Wright and Pascale Carayon on election to the National Academy of Engineering

Congratulations to Stephen Wright and Pascale Carayon on their election to the National Academy of Engineering. Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.

Stephen J. Wright, professor of computer sciences, UW–Madison. For theory and design of optimization algorithms and their application in signal processing and machine learning.

Pascale Carayon, professor emerita of industrial and systems engineering at UW–Madison. For application of human factors engineering to health care systems to improve patient safety. Carayon retired from UW-Madison in 2021 after a 30-year tenure during which she built a reputation as an internationally renowned expert in applying human factors to the healthcare system.
