Wisconsin Alzheimers Fall Research Conversation: The Impact of Social Connections on Brain Health is Sept. 10

Free and open to people of all ages, register to attend this educational event hosted by the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) that will provide information to help people stay connected, improve brain health, support memory and live healthier, happier lives.

The program will offer complimentary refreshments, a health and wellness resource fair and feature University of Wisconsin faculty Dorothy Farrar-Edwards, PhD, Andrea Gilmore-Bykovskyi, PhD, RN, David Rakel, MD, and Vonnie Sisauyhoat, PhD, who will discuss the science behind social connection and why it is essential to our well-being. Art Walaszek, MD, will moderate the conversation and Q&A panel.


Sustainability Research Visioning Event is Sept. 11

The event, which is hosted by the Sustainability Research Hub, is designed to connect researchers and facilitate discussion around RISE-EARTH and sustainability research on campus. The event will feature a variety of breakout sessions on RISE research possibilities, as well as existing on-campus opportunities and activities.

UW Innovate Week is Sept. 23-27

Are you a campus researcher, problem-solver, inventor, maker, entrepreneur, or social impact innovator? Are you looking to maximize impact for your research, turn your idea into a product or service, or start a company or organization? Discover inspiring stories and practical tools to advance your idea at Innovate Week, coordinated by UW’s Discovery to Product (D2P) and Innovate Network.

Events cover innovation, entrepreneurship and research commercialization topics for multiple audiences (faculty, staff, students, postdocs, community members). Subject areas addressed include healthcare, energy, artificial intelligence, business, the entrepreneurial mindset, technology commercialization across disciplines, and fundraising for early-stage startups.

All events are open to campus audiences. Events also open to the public include the Wisconsin Entrepreneurs Showcase (featuring speakers in healthcare/medical devices, media and advertising, and mobile and social gaming); Fusion Forward: Commercializing Fusion Technology; AI Across the Spectrum of Innovation, and How Open Source is Fostering Innovation in AI.

UW Carbone Cancer Center’s 22nd Annual Fall Cancer Conference: Misinformation, Myths & Misbeliefs is Oct. 18 at the Monona Terrace

The keynote features Ethan Zohn who gave the word survivor a whole new meaning. Winning CBS Survivor: Africa’s $1 million dollar prize was the springboard to an exceptional life of social purpose, advocacy, and entrepreneurship. Zohn is a former professional soccer player, a two-time cancer crusher, TV personality, author and co-founder of Grassroot Soccer (GRS) which is an adolescent health organization that uses the power of soccer to educate, inspire and mobilize communities to improve health. Over the last 20 years, Zohn has been an important force in driving the strategic direction of GRS and building partnerships that have helped to provide life-saving education for more than 25 million young people in 65 countries.

Since publicly sharing his two battles with CD20+ Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and two stem cell transplants, Zohn has been named a global ambassador for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, StandUp2Cancer, AKTIV Against Cancer, EO Care and others.
