Data Science Research Bazaar

The 7th annual Data Science Research Bazaar at UW–Madison welcomes submissions for lightning talks, posters, training sessions, and focused discussions. Researchers, students, and professionals at all levels of expertise can apply to showcase their work at the main conference and other events this spring. Please help us share this opportunity by forwarding this email to colleagues, announcing it in lab / group meetings, and including it in newsletters and other communications. Newsletter template language available (133 word count or 60 word count). Please e-mail Mary Murphy (murphy22@wisc.edu) if interested.

The Research Bazaar brings together researchers from diverse fields who use data, computing, and software in their work. This year’s theme—Meaning in the Metrics—highlights creative strategies for translating research into compelling formats, and it explores how research insights can be communicated to a variety of audiences, ranging from collaborators to policymakers to the general public.

Applicants can propose to present their work, either related to the theme or more broadly focused on data science and computation, at one or more Research Bazaar events. The main conference, with opportunities to present lightning talks and posters, will be on March 19. Training sessions and focused discussions will be held throughout March and April.

Proposals are due January 15. Learn more and apply

Resources for Preclinical Animal Modeling in Swine

Please join us to learn more about the cutting-edge services and support the UW Center for Biomedical Swine Research and Innovation (CBSRI) offers to the UW clinical research community!

This presentation (link here) will explore the critical resources available for preclinical animal modeling in swine, emphasizing their broad applicability for addressing chronic diseases. We will detail the unique advantages of using both conventional swine and the human-sized Wisconsin Miniature Swine (WMS) across a spectrum of research needs, including surgical approaches, advanced medical imaging, theranostics, drug screening, and cell therapies.

The talk will specifically highlight tangible deliverables, including existing cell and animal models, comprehensive procedural capabilities, and essential pre- and post-study services, providing researchers with a roadmap for leveraging these resources in highly translational studies.

Please Note: This session is limited to UW–Madison faculty, staff, and students and UW Health employees.

Research Core Revitalization Program (RCRP4)

We are excited to announce the fourth round of an initiative to strengthen campus research core capacities at UW–Madison. The Research Core Revitalization Program (RCRP) is an important initiative that supports the upgrade, replacement, or duplication of heavily used shared research resources. Shared instruments, equipment, and other resources play a critical role in research across the university and typically have a limited lifespan. Although essential and highly used, these resources may not be eligible or competitive for federal and other external grant programs targeting new capabilities and technologies. Researchers across campus depend on the shared resources managed by cores, and reinvestment in these capabilities ensures the continuity and productivity of our research enterprise.

The RCRP was first launched in fall 2019, and the most recent round was offered in fall 2023. Over 40 projects have been awarded to date. Projects have upgraded video recording capabilities for intellectual and developmental disabilities research, delivered increased computational speed for analyzing large biomedical datasets, and ensured the integrity of natural history collections. RCRP awards have supported more than 70 successful grant proposals generating over $90 million in extramural funding. Applicants associated with research cores in all divisions—Arts & Humanities, Biological Sciences,
Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences—are encouraged to apply. Proposals for one-time investments must be made by a lead Principal Investigator (PI) associated with a research core facility. Academic staff including research professors and Clinical Health Science (CHS) faculty are invited as co-investigators, and collaborative proposals are encouraged.

The RCRP is funded by the OVCR with support from the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF). Each award will be in the range of $100,000 to $500,000 for direct costs.

Applications are due no later than Friday, February 20, 2026, at 4:30 p.m.

For additional information and instructions on how to apply, see the Research Core Revitalization Program webpage (https://research.wisc.edu/research-core-revitalization-program-4). Please forward this announcement to interested applicants in your area. Investing in our research infrastructure is essential for building a thriving research enterprise in the years ahead.

Expedited Processing for UW-Madison Template Agreements

To streamline and encourage the use of UW-Madison template agreements, Research and Sponsored Programs (RSP) has developed a prioritization plan for:

  • Unmodified UW Template Agreements
  • Unmodified Work Orders under UW-Madison executed Master Agreements

Please note that a list of current UW Template Agreements can be found at: https://rsp.wisc.edu/forms/ under “Agreement Forms” or, for School/College specific templates, on the RSP SharePoint (Agreement Templates).” Cores can work with their departmental/divisional research administrators and RSP to set up core-specific templates if needed. Once approved, the templates can qualify for expedited processing.

For more information please visit the Research and Sponsored Programs webpage on “Agreement Negotiation” and listed PDF under the section “Expedited Processing for UW-Madison Template Agreements”.

Facilities Research Day

The eleventh annual Facilities Day will be hosted by the Wisconsin Centers for Nanoscale Technology and the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center on the University of Wisconsin–Madison Campus.

The right techniques for your research

Facilities Day features tutorials for common microscopy and microanalysis techniques available in the UW–Madison shared facilities. These tutorials and introductions are an excellent learning opportunity for everyone, from faculty and graduate students to industrial users.

Facilities Tours

There is an opportunity to tour the Facilities at the end of the day following the event, around 3:45 p.m. If interested, please look for the sign-up upon checking in to the event to attend the tour.

This all-day event is FREE to all attendees. Find out more here.

Shout-outs

***Want to thank or recognize a core staff member who went above and beyond to support your research or the research of a core user? Email Sarah Brodnick (skkorinek@wisc.edu) with the individual’s name and a sentence or two about why they deserve a shout-out. Shout-outs will also be posted at https://research.wisc.edu/research-cores/research-resources-reporter/.
