RCRP3 Award Winners

The Research Core Revitalization Program (RCRP) is the third round of an initiative to strengthen campus research core capacities by supporting the upgrade, replacement or duplication of heavily used shared research resources. Shared instruments, equipment and other resources play a critical role in research across the university and typically have a limited lifespan.

Here are the 15 projects chosen for funding in Round 3 of the RCRP (2024):

MRI and Loan Program Funding Opportunities

Major Research Instrumentation (MRI)

Internal deadline announcement coming mid-July

Research Core Equipment Loan Program

The Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration (VCFA) and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) have partnered to launch a loan program that provides a sustainable way to upgrade research core facilities. Find proposal process and requirements here.

BINA

BINA (Bioimaging North America) 2024 Community Congress will take place this year at UW–Madison Sept 23-26 and be focused on building: community, tools, and expertise. Friday Sept 27 will be an optional day with workshops and local facility tours! Register by August 15th.

Core Highlight

Arboretum
You’ve probably walked the beautiful native prairie trails at the Arboretum, but did you know they also house and conduct research?!

  • Ecological monitoring and mapping
  • Historical weather records
  • Annual Arboretum Research Symposium

The Arboretum is the site of historic research in ecological restoration and includes the oldest and most varied collection of restored ecological communities in the world. Researchers can conduct field experiments in the prairies, savannas, forests, wetlands, and shorelines of the 1200-acre Arboretum in Madison, as well as at the 11 other properties we manage across WI. Researchers have access to resources and services including: field equipment, mesocosm facility, long-term datasets, land management records, daily weather records, research support services, staff expertise, public connections, and meeting spaces.

Visit the Research Core Directory Arboretum page for more information including resources and services offered.

Question of the Month!

We need your feedback! Email Sarah Brodnick (skkorinek@wisc.edu) with your answer to the following question:  “What piece of shared research equipment would you most like to see as an addition to the UW–Madison campus?”

New Resources For Existing Cores

Chemistry Magnetic Resonance Facility: Nyx 500 MHz NMR
360 MHz liquids NMR with WiHP high pressure apparatus. Broadband 5mm, inverse broadband 5mm, and broadband 10mm probes; WiHP provides constant gas pressures up to 1000psi; sample temperatures can range from -150C to +150C.

Vision Research Core:  Agilent SeaHorse XF HS Mini Analyzer
The SeaHorse Mini measures and reports energy metabolism and vital indicators of mitochondrial health, toxicity, and overall cellular function.

Shout-outs

Want to thank or recognize a core staff member who went above and beyond to support your research or the research of a core user? Email Sarah Brodnick (skkorinek@wisc.edu) with the individual’s name and a sentence or two about why they deserve a shout-out. Shout-outs will also be posted at https://research.wisc.edu/research-cores/research-resources-reporter/.
