New Research Core Equipment Loan Program
The Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration (VCFA) and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) have partnered to launch the Research Core Equipment Loan Program, which provides a sustainable way to upgrade research core facilities whose equipment needs may not be competitive for grant funding.
Research core directors can request interest-free loans ranging from $20,000 to $500,000 to purchase innovative equipment, replace equipment at or beyond the end of its useful life, duplicate equipment with demand exceeding capacity, or upgrade existing equipment. Cores will be required to secure at least 10% of the purchase price from other sources. The loans will be amortized over the life of the equipment with cores making annual payments. As loans are repaid, the continually replenishing loan fund will be used to issue new loans.
Carefully review all proposal and program guidelines at https://research.wisc.edu/research-cores/loan-program/ before applying. A Notice of Intent meeting program guidelines may be submitted at any time.
NIH Instrumentation (S10) Grant Programs
NIH is accepting applications to its Shared Instrumentation Grant (SIG) and High-End Instrumentation (HEI) (S10) programs. Multiple applications from UW–Madison for similar instruments require official administrative assurance that such requests are a coordinated institutional effort and not unintended duplication. For this reason, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research review of the equipment requested is required. Notices of intent are due for internal review by April 25, 2024.
To submit your notice of intent, attach a single PDF to an email to grants@research.wisc.edu. Please include the following:
- Cover Page including PI name, address, and department
- Indication of program intent: HEI or SIG
- Name and description of the instrument
- Statement of intended use
- List of the potential users
Applications are due to NIH June 3, 2024.
Electrical Safety Symposium
UW–Madison is hosting the Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) Spring Symposium on April 9 and 10. This year’s symposium focuses on electrical safety at institutions of higher education, and the agenda includes multiple sessions specific to laboratory safety. The agenda and registration information are available at https://www.cshema.org/index.php/events-training/educational-opportunities/symposia.
Statistical Consulting Survey
The Statistical Consulting Group, now part of the Statistics Department in L&S, is gauging interest in statistical consulting and assessing unmet needs across the campus research community. Please share feedback regarding your interest in future statistical consulting or collaboration through this 3-minute survey: https://forms.gle/6EkC6kC31xS1YaCAA. You may also forward the survey link to colleagues.

Shout-outs
Want to thank or recognize a core staff member who went above and beyond to support your research or the research of a core user? Email Ryan Pingel (rpingel@wisc.edu) with the individual’s name and a sentence or two about why they deserve a shout-out. Shout-outs will also be posted at https://research.wisc.edu/research-cores/research-resources-reporter/.
