The CHTC Researcher Forum is an annual event to connect CHTC users, announce new and exciting updates, and hear from our users. You’ll hear about what we’re working on, how other users are leveraging compute resources, and have the opportunity to share your feedback and your research! All CHTC users (undergraduate, graduate, postdoc, staff, PI) and those in the research computing community are invited to attend. Registration is encouraged.

Jared Beck (he/him), Research Ecologist, UW–Madison Arboretum. Why are prairies losing plant diversity? And what can we do about it? In this talk, Beck will explore how habitat fragmentation and fire combine to influence plant reproduction and plant populations in fragmented tallgrass prairies. Fee: $10. Register by February 15.

Join a WRFI representative for pizza and to learn more about the Wild Rockies Field Institute program! Experience the American West through backpacking trips, kayaking expeditions, bike tours, & meetings with stakeholders & community members who call these places home. On these intensive field programs offered by WRFI, you will explore the issues facing human & ecological communities in the areas of climate change, ecological restoration, rural livelihoods, and more.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Finals Competition

3MT is an international research communication competition in which graduate students explain their research to a general audience. Students in research-based master’s and PhD programs from all disciplines are eligible to compete, and prizes will be awarded to the winners. All are welcome to attend as audience members at this event. Registration is not required for the audience.

AI Meets Society

Jointly hosted by the Wisconsin AI Safety Initiative (WAISI) and UW–Madison’s School of Computer, Data & Information Sciences (CDIS), the AI Meets Society (AIMS) Symposium brings together interdisciplinary experts from scientific research, industry, the humanities, and government to examine AI’s real-world impacts and its future trajectory.

Volunteer for restoration activities and learn about prairies and savannas. Tools and training provided. Groups welcome with advance notice. This gently paced walk explores ecological communities near the Visitor Center. Themes may include the land, plants, animals, other organisms, phenology, and ecology. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and come prepared for weather. Routes are wheelchair accessible when weather allows. Walks canceled for unsafe conditions. Free, no registration required. Steven Davis, Professor of Political Science and Environmental Studies, Edgewood University. Davis’s new book, The Other Public Lands, is the first comprehensive account of the natural resource lands owned and managed by the fifty states. Davis will explore how policymakers underestimate or ignore the spectacular real value found in our state parks in favor of a strategy of neglect and austerity. Fee: $10. Register by February 22.
