Class: Mindfulness in Nature – Body Movement and Awareness

Mindfulness helps reduce stress and improve physical and mental health using a moment-to-moment awareness of one’s experience without judgment. Mindfulness in Nature uses nature for all practices (sitting, standing, and moving). Monthly series runs through October. No experience needed. Instructor: Roger Reynolds, certified natural mindfulness guide. Outdoor class. Fee: $10. Register by October 21. Meet at the Visitor Center.
Touring the Lost City

In the 1920s, developers planned a "Venice of the North," to be called Lake Forest. That land is now part of the Arboretum. Hike to the site of the failed subdivision, discovering construction remnants along the way. Tour entails stepping over obstacles. Free, space is limited. Dr. Cindy Hsin-Liu Kao is an Associate Professor in Human Centered Design, with graduate field faculty appointments in Information Science, and Electrical & Computer Engineering at Cornell University. She founded and directs the Hybrid Body Lab. Her research practice themed Hybrid Body Craft blends cultural and social perspectives into the design of on-body interfaces.
Finding Buried Health Data

Are the mortality records you’re looking for long departed? Is the website of infectious disease stats you needed a ghostly memory? If you need to dig up sources of health information from the archival and digital graveyards, this workshop is for you. Join history of health sciences librarian, Hannah Swan, and public health librarian, Susan Vandagriff, as they show you how to resurrect historical health data using archival materials, vital records, the Wayback Machine, and more.

Research Methods in the History of Health Sciences

Join History of Health Sciences Librarian Hannah Swan for a hands-on look at research in the history of medicine. We will cover primary source research at UW-Madison (and beyond!) and useful databases and online resources, before finishing with an introduction to handling rare materials using the Ebling Historical Collections. Attendees will have a chance to view rare books, photographs, and ephemera from the collections, as well as the current historical exhibition.
