CULTIVATE: Transforming Scientific Systems by Cultivating Virtue Ethics in Scientists
PI: Amit Bernstein, professor of Counseling Psychology & Center for Healthy Minds
Co-PIs:
Nicole Nelson, associate professor of Medical History and Bioethics
Jodi Schneider, associate professor Information School
Description: CULTIVATE proposes a new approach: focusing on the internal ethical qualities of scientists themselves, such as curiosity, humility, altruism and objectivity. The team will study whether strengthening these qualities can improve the integrity, rigor and innovation of scientific work. The team will develop new ways to measure these qualities, design training programs to support them, and test whether they lead to better science. By developing this work at UW–Madison, they aim to create scalable models that can improve how science is conducted across institutions nationally and globally.
