Acquisition of a State-of-the-art LC-MSMS Instrument to Support Rapid Discovery of New Molecules and Synthetic Methods

The discovery of molecules that address human needs, such as new medicines, represents a major contribution of chemistry to society. UW–Madison has a long history of leadership in this realm, including isolation and identification of natural molecules with useful properties, the creation of new molecules with high value, and the development of reaction processes that enable or streamline the production of valuable molecules.

Continued progress toward these important goals requires researchers to have rapid access to state-of-the-art LC-MSMS capabilities. This project acquires a modern instrument to perform liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MSMS) analysis; this instrument will be available for real-time analysis by UW–Madison researchers, which will accelerate the pace of discovery.

A LC-MSMS has two main components: the LC rapidly separates components of complex mixtures from one another, and the MS determines the molecular weight of each species. This combination is extraordinarily powerful for many types of chemical research that focus on isolation or creation of molecules. The instrument will be housed in the Chemical Instrumentation Center (CIC) within the Department of Chemistry, which will maximize availability to researchers across the UW–Madison campus and in the broader community.
