Project Description

The Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship recognizes innovative, promising new faculty, whose exceptional talent for research and innovation identifies them as emerging leaders in a computer science or related field. Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. Fellows should support this mission by fostering diverse and inclusive cultures within their communities.

Amount per Award: $100,000 per year
Duration of Award: 2 years
Number of Awards: 5 Research Faculty Fellowships were awarded in 2020

Eligibility

Nominees must be full-time faculty at a degree-granting college or university in North America or South America.

Faculty must have received their terminal degree (e.g., PhD, DSc) in May 2016 or later.

Currently conducting research, advising graduate students, and teaching in a classroom.

Proposed research must be closely related to the general research areas carried out by Microsoft Research.

UW-Madison may submit up to 3 nominations.  If more than one is nominated, then the other one or two nominees should help increase the opportunities for faculty who are underrepresented in the field of computing. This includes those who self-identify as a woman, African American, Black, Hispanic, Latinx, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and/or person with a disability.

Applications for Internal Review

To submit your application, attach a single PDF to an email to: grants@research.wisc.edu

Please include the following:

  • Cover Page including:
    • Name and academic title of PI
    • Contact information
    • Primary and secondary areas of research
    • Date terminal degree was received (May 2016 or later)
    • Optional: As noted above, does applicant self identify as underrepresented in the field of computing?
  • CV
  • Two-page statement of research to include: your major research initiatives, what makes your approaches especially innovative, and how you would use the funding and the impact it would have on your research; a paragraph describing how you support the mission of fostering diversity and inclusive cultures within your student and researcher communities and how you plan to in the future; a font size no smaller than 10-point is suggested and references should be included as part of the two pages
  • Note: The Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship is funded by the Microsoft Corporation and therefore, full indirects must be charged to the project if funded per University policy

Sponsor Deadlines

Nominations are due to Microsoft by February 22, 2021. Applications are due to Microsoft by March 29, 2021.
