FLOW LAB TRAINING OPPORTUNITY

The Flow Cytometry Lab will host a presentation by Slingshot Biosciences called “Revolutionary Cellular Controls and Cell Lines” from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on May 14 in WIMR #7001. The Flow Lab will have example data from our instruments on the products in this presentation.

NEW RESEARCH CORE DIRECTORY LISTING

Cryo-Electron Microscopy Research Center

The UW-Madison Cryo-Electron Microscopy Research Center (CEMRC) is a research facility located in the Hector F. DeLuca Biochemical Sciences Complex on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The UW-Madison CEMRC is dedicated to providing instrumentation, technical assistance, training, and access to cryo-EM for the UW-Madison research community. The CEMRC manages and operates four cryo-microscopes for data collection by single particle, tomography, and micro-ED. The microscopes are overseen by experienced staff who offer consultation and training in negative-stain and vitrified sample preparation, single particle analysis, tomography, data processing and additional computational support.

Midwest Center for Cryo-Electron Tomography

Midwest Center for Cryo-Electron Tomography‘s (MCCET) mission is to support investigators by providing access to well-trained staff and state-of-the-art equipment for (1) routine and advanced cryo-ET specimen preparation, data collection, and computation; and (2) hands-on, remote, and virtual training in cryo-ET specimen preparation, data collection, and data processing and validation.

See Research Cores Directory for full listing of campus cores.

NEW RESOURCE FOR EXISTING CORE

Biophysics Instrumentation Facility:  Low Volume Isothermal Titration Calorimeter
Isothermal Titration Calorimetery (ITC) provides a direct measurement of these heats and is particularly well suited for the study of the noncovalent interactions involved in protein – protein and protein – ligand interactions. Data from a single experiment can often provide a complete thermodynamic characterization of the interaction.

ORGANIZATIONAL CONSULTING AVAILABLE

The Office of Strategic Consulting is now offering Organizational Office Hours to provide an opportunity for faculty, unit leaders, managers and supervisors, and other UW–Madison staff to explore organizational challenges or opportunities with an organizational effectiveness expert. Organizational Office Hours — available at no cost — are virtual one-hour consultations with one of the office’s internal consultants. Any faculty or staff member can submit a request form, which includes a list of these general topic areas.

Change management

Climate and culture enhancement

Process design and improvement

Organization and program design

Strategic development and planning

Team development

Individual leadership coaching (informational only)

ORGANIZATIONAL TRANSPORTATION OF BIOLOGICAL MATERIALS ON CAMPUS

UW–Madison is exempt from the US Dept. of Transportation Hazardous Materials transport regulations (CFR49) when moving materials on campus or in a campus vehicle on roadways. However, we must still adhere to some safety guidelines when moving materials to and from core facilities. See guidance from the Office of Biological Safety at https://ehs.wisc.edu/labs-research/biological-safety/campus-transport-of-biologicals/.

SHOUT-OUTS

Sara Haney (Water Science and Engineering Laboratory)

This edition gives a shout out to Sara Haney. While her tenure with the WSEL has been brief so far, Sara has had a decidedly positive impact. WSEL researchers often go out of their way to praise Sara’s efforts. Of note, Sara is exemplary at communicating technical details for all of our techniques and their related preparatory considerations to researchers who are just starting their careers and may not have a detailed understanding of the care and consideration necessary generate demonstrably high quality data. Sara is deeply involved with the refinement of our training protocols, and often picks up additional work in an effort to solve broader analytical questions. Sara’s focus on helping WSEL researchers achieve desirable outcomes each and every time they approach a shared resource is one of the reasons why working at the Core in WSEL is such a positive experience for so many people.

Want to thank or recognize a core staff member who went above and beyond to support your research or the research of a core user? Email Sarah Brodnick (skkorinek@wisc.edu) with the individual’s name and a sentence or two about why they deserve a shout-out. Shout-outs will also be posted at https://research.wisc.edu/research-cores/research-resources-reporter/.
