Faculty Grant Writing Bootcamp Spring/Summer 2018
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education (OVCRGE) will be offering a ‘bootcamp’ in grant writing, which will run from approximately April 16 to August 30, 2018. The workshop will meet about twice a month during the spring semester and approximately weekly during the summer months.
This grant writing bootcamp is targeted to junior and early mid-career faculty, especially those with a goal of submitting their first external grant or fellowship application, in the Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities Divisions. In addition, health services research faculty and researchers conducting psychosocial intervention/treatment studies in the Biological Sciences Division are eligible.
The bootcamp is designed to provide participants with the information, feedback and structured timeline that will facilitate crafting a strong research or fellowship proposal. All participants in the workshop will be expected to submit an external grant or fellowship application following completion of the workshop, and will be strongly encouraged to submit a Fall Research Competition application as insurance.
Workshop sessions will combine presentations, discussion sessions, and mock reviews of participants’ proposals. Topics covered will include:
• Determining the best funding source (NIH, NSF, other gov’t agencies, foundations)
• Key elements of a successful grant proposal or fellowship application
• Crafting a budget
• Getting Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval
• Handling the resubmission process and effectively responding to critiques
• The role of Research and Sponsored Programs (RSP) in the pre-award and post-award process
• Campus resources to help identify sources of funding
The grant writing bootcamp will be led by Professors Marcy Carlson (Sociology) and James Walker (Economics). Additional senior faculty may be recruited to serve as co-leaders depending on the specific disciplines and goals of the workshop participants.
The application deadline is February 26, 2018. See application instructions on the following page. Applicants will be notified of the selection committee’s decision in March.

Eligibility. Applicants must be: 1) faculty members with a primary appointment in a department in the social sciences or arts and humanities divisions, or faculty who conduct social science research in other divisions; and 2) committed to submitting an external grant proposal or fellowship application during the Fall, 2018. Academic staff with a research appointment should contact Associate Vice Chancellor Jan Greenberg to discuss eligibility.
Selection Process:
The applications will be reviewed by a group of senior faculty members to determine readiness to prepare a grant or fellowship. There is a limited number of faculty spots in the Bootcamp each year.

• A current CV
• A letter of support from your departmental chair
• Names and contact information for 2 senior UW-Madison faculty who have relevant substantive or methodological expertise and have agreed to serve as mentors to you in developing your grant proposal or fellowship application.
You will be notified about the outcome of your application by the middle of March.
