Recommendation Systems: A route to reaching mass audiences with tailored persuasive appeals?

Ivan L. Preston Research Colloquium with Dr. Joseph N. Cappella from the Annenberg School for Communication

April 6th, 3:30pm–5:00pm

Nafziger Conference Room, 5055 , Vilas Hall

The history of persuasive communication shows that reaching many people with the same message is efficient but ineffective while developing personalized appeals is effective but inefficient. Computationally based recommendation systems – analogous to the suggestions made to customers by Amazon for books and Netflix for movies -- offer an avenue to delivering persuasive messages efficiently that are simultaneously effective.
